Imagine this scenario. After over a decade with your company, you lock yourself out of your computer and you call Technical Support to have them reset it. The guy is super friendly but here was the irony.
Tech support guy: “I will need to leave your password on your manager’s voice mail.”
You: “My manager is traveling and I need to be able to work. Is there no other option?”
Tech support guy: “That is company policy.”
You: “Can you leave it on my HR Manager’s voice mail?”
Tech support guy: “Hold on. I will be right back.” After 4 minutes, “yes, I can. What is his email address?”
You: “Well, his name is John Smith”
Tech support guy: “I need his user ID.”
You: “I don’t have access to my PC so I can’t look it up.” [Imagine, the bubble that goes over your head now]
Tech support guy: “Why don’t you ask one of your colleagues around you for the ID?”
You: “I am a full time teleworker so there is no one to ask and since I locked myself out, I can send anyone an IM.” [Now, even a bigger bubble is your head going - wow, these policies are for the old world].
You: “Wait, let me grab my iPAD and tell you what it is.”
And that is how you were able to provide it: through a device you bought yourself. And now you wait for John Smith to give you the password so you can be productive and work again. You SMS him and nothing. So what do you do? How do you get your work done?
