Embracing the Challenges

Embracing the challenges and transforming them into opportunities changes everything. That’s why it’s crucial to stop reimagining broken systems and start creating healthy systems that support us.

Did you know that 40% of female physicians are stepping back from clinical practice or leaving the field? However, maybe these challenges hold the key to real transformation in medicine. Instead of feeling discouraged, we seize this opportunity to create a healthy healthcare system.

These challenges might hold the key to real transformation in medicine. Instead of feeling discouraged, we can seize this opportunity to create a healthy healthcare system.

Female surgeons consistently achieve better patient outcomes and dedicate more time to their patients. This presents an opportunity to develop fresh approaches that recognize and value their unique strengths and perspectives. By adopting an opportunity mindset, we can focus on creating the solutions we need, rather than merely fixing problems.

Despite their expertise, female physicians face daily hurdles such as sexism, hostility, and harassment. They endure criticism, experience reduced pay during pregnancy, and are subjected to inappropriate behavior. Unfair assumptions about their competence continue to persist.

Dr Shirlene Obuobi recently shared, “I recently asked my female colleagues to share some of the criticism they’ve received over the years. Patients have commented on their makeup and appearance. Co-workers have offered unsolicited advice about the impact of career choices on family. Patients have assumed they weren’t doctors because they are female. One doctor told me she was criticized for the pitch of her voice; another for talking too much to her patients.”

Healthy Foundations Are Needed

It’s interesting women receive 26 percent more inbox messages than their male counterparts, with an expectation to spend more time answering queries. Perhaps what’s needed is more communication and empathy. But this cannot be achieved within a broken system of care.

The prevalence of male-dominated leadership roles in medicine presents an opportunity for men to step up as allies and advocates. Both men and women can contribute to creating a supportive environment through increased accountability.

The exodus of talent within years of training calls for introspection and holistic solutions.

The path ahead lies in increased communication and direct involvement. It’s no surprise that when the healthcare system is divided and unhealthy, we all suffer the consequences. So, let’s focus on the opportunities instead.

By embracing their authentic selves, physicians can inspire change, promote wellness, and shape the landscape of health. Collective efforts offer opportunities for all physicians to come together, share experiences, and find innovative solutions.

Instead of seeing challenges as insurmountable obstacles, let’s view them as catalysts for creating healthy paths that heal. Ultimately, our health depends on healthy and caring systems. And we understand that we are the ones navigating our health by asking questions and advocating for what we need.

Embracing this challenge, we can build a future where medicine is inclusive, compassionate, and patient-centered. Together, we empower and support all physicians, leading to better healthcare outcomes for everyone.

To Hell With Consequences, It’s About the Opportunities

A sick healthcare system directly impacts the well-being of everyone who depends on it for their health. The flaws, divisions, and unhealthy dynamics within the system have far-reaching consequences for individuals seeking care. It is crucial to identify and address the underlying issues that contribute to the system’s sickness.

We can go beyond addressing the surface-level symptoms and tackle the deeper structural problems that perpetuate its illness. This requires a comprehensive and transformative approach to create a healthier healthcare system that truly prioritizes the well-being of individuals and society as a whole.

Moreover, we can create a healthcare system that adopts a holistic perspective and integrates  the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our bodies. It is vital to bridge practices that encompass the whole person and create interconnected systems to support overall well-being. By embracing this holistic approach, we cultivate a healthcare system that truly nurtures and supports individuals in all aspects of health.
